As they eventually rub, the insulation (is there any) will break down, then the paint on the chasis will wear off finally ending up in a short?

I think it is reverse engineering. Firstly you sing into the speaker which in turn is connected to the amp through to the mixer and finally out of the mic.

Yes it does look a bit like the connections on the classic RCA mic's smiley1

The cable do not actually rub on the chassis, They have a few mm clearance
I can only assume that it is to enable the cable to have a longer curve to allow for the massive Xmax that these buggers have got +- 19mm It just looked very strange when I first saw it.
