I personally think RIG 4 is the way to do it

Produce a killer sound. Take no prisoners.

I would try to stack the sub and bass closer together to get a coherant sound.

Beware of doing too large a stack of subs in one pile, especially width-ways. It'll start getting too directional.

I
would go for maybe three stacks, one on each side with the mid tops
then a centre cluster. Or maybe better, do two stacks of 4 HD215's on
their sides rather than ends. with the mid-tops on top, then next to
them do a 2 wide, 3 high stack of X1's.

Depends to a certain extent how high you want to get the mid-tops.

Interresting!

I still wonder how an X1 perform without the the floor underneath:

Rig #3 would be my choice if I was doing such a setup.

Providing the height is taller than the width of the boxes, you should have no problems controlling where you want the sound to go.

As far as I know, if it's another cab underneath then it'll behave as if it's on the floor. Just like stacking horns.
