Some of the pictures are unavalible due to my ISP fu** up my DNS settings.

I'm currently in the middle of a big build. A budget studio/good pre-prod studio.
I have a build log on the company's homepage (ok. the web pages have not been the highest priority...) hamaudio.no/web/ but this is in Norwegian soI thought i could add a small thread here as well, for those interested.

Background:
The location is eastern countryside Norway. In the 2nd floor in a barn. The room has been used for all kinds of things. Chicken, storage, grain and so forth.
This is what it looks like, in the flesh.

Its behind the two small windows.

-

-

-

You can see the room is pretty rough. I'm hoping to preserve allot of the rough image.
One of the wall will be insulated from the outside, so that i will still have the raw wood on the inside. All the others will finally end up with plasterboard.
The roof will have to be about 5cm lower that the roof beams. But the heavy beams under that will be kept raw.

The wall on the right in this picture will be insulated from the behind.

This is what the wall looks like on the other side.
-

And after the first round of plaster board. Next stead here is to "build it out?", add insulation then 1 layer of plaster board another layer of woodfiber board to finish it off.
-

I'm adding plasterboard to the roof and sides of the roof beams to make it airtight and stiffer before the insulation goes in.

The hatches to the room on the next floor has been sealed in the most efficient manner. More plaster board and acrylic.
-
Its important to have something to do when i need a break. So the drums are, of course, all ready set up. A little hassle moving them around all the time, but worth it. Also very fascinating to hear the acoustic change during construction.

-
You need good equipment to get the job done :)

-
You cant see from this picture, but getting the plasterboard up there took a miracle. The entrance is 90degrees on and 60cm wider than the plaster board. oh, and yes, the truck did not have any brakes besides reverse.

-
(That's it for now. 14.08.2008)

Been working some more on the outside the last weekend.

The old wall is stripped down:

-

-
Then the insulation is added.

-
Next layer will be regular plaster board, then plank.
-

I also started work on the base for the stairs. A small concrete platform must be made.

-
Thats it for now.

2 layers of plasterboard is done in the control room. Just begun spackling a little.
Still alot todo. All the electric, the ventilation, the signalcable paths and plenty of details.

Before i start the other side of the wall i cut the window out of the control room side.

Finaly. it looks like a room. The feeling is incredible. New inspiration.

This is the floor swill, showing how the two opposite walls are of different weight and stiffness to ensure different resonant frequensies.

I've started the work of tubes and boxes.

The switches, 2x3, 2 switches for each room.1x3 for basic lighting and 1x3 for extra moodsetting lighting.

Two sets of powerlines aswell. 1 data line and a sensitive equipment line. Like mic pres and guitaramps.

I've chosen a simple and efficient method of insulating the boxes. Rude mold of cardboard, drownd in plasterboard dust, then i spray polyetheran fome behind it.

Alright! Spring is coming to tractor country. Its Ayeh Oh Kay!! to be working in my second floor studio.

-

But back to the plasterboard. All the woodwork is done. More plasterboard. That will be my life the next days, then its over to *thegraystuffyouputonplasterboardjoints* and acrylic. Allot of acrylic. Have used 30 0.33l tubes until now.

-

This is the control room. The two layers on the opposite room is not yet cut.

For the curious and near sighted.

-

Bad light setting for my cheap cam.

-

The walls ended up beeing 24cm deep.

Jumped a few steps here. Can`t run around with the camera ALL the time :)

Most plasterboard is used, a few cm^2 missing around a door to the storage room.

Control room:

The "big room":

The roof became, of course, white. 03 gloss. The walls are painted "Bright Toscana". Can`t remember the NCS code but it contains yellow and red, so its a bright earth color. 07 gloss, latex.
-

The "super damped" room is not that far progressed. After some spatling, just 1 wall will be painted, the 3 others and the roof will be covered in acustic threatment constructions. I really look forth to the Rt60 results in here.

And then.... More windows.

The gap between the walls are stuffed with rockwool, then a heavy duty cotton cloth is applied to keep the dust away from my windows.

Then I apply pressure to the glass forcing it onto my pre-mounted *somesomethinginenglish*

The electrician has been visiting. 2x tripple switch is completed and most of the sockets.

What are you doing about room treatment, if I may enquire?

1. That's pretty far ahead in time.

2. I've designed and produced my own acoustic treatment frames. I will also make diffusers and bass-traps.

There will be 3 rooms IN the room. a control room (1/4) a pop/drum/vocal room (1/4) and then a regular room (2/4).

Control room: medium damping, some diffusers
pop/vocal room: ultra heavy damping/diffusers combos.
"big room": medium/low damping, diffusers

I'm really not into the idea of damping the hole studio to death. I don't do POP. I keep a good distance to the commercial over produced crap.

Everything is part of the acoustic treatment. The bonus here is heat insulation, not the other way around.
