Hi Toasty, The original idea for my demo room was to make it non reflective as apposed to sound proof. However due to the nature of the units we made it obviously helped. The room itself was 100mm stud work which was filled with Rock Wool and then I put 2 layers of plaster board on making it an 1" thick. The separate units that we made were then glued on. The panels were made from old pallets covered in calico and stuffed with hard Rock silk which we cut with a special cutter used in the rag trade.
When we did our first Hi Fi show we used portable panels which we hung on the frame work in the room. The pads do absorb so they would certainly contribute so sound proofing. Here's a picture of the portable panels we used at the Hi Fi show.
If you want any more clarification on the pads, just give me the nod.

I'm not sure I'll actually need to do much of this, in all honesty I'm not inconsiderate with the levels and they are genuinely just being hypersensitive because of bad experiences with a few neighbours in the past, so simply indicating that I know what causes the problems and possible solutions should be enough.

First step is a decent set of stands so I can move the speakers away from the wall though...

As you probably know, the Monacor is (guess) a shade under 50 quid. In that sort of price range I would also recommend the 83xxxxx series from Peerless (used the HDS series, they good), and the Volt LS201 (probably about a tenner more). The Vifa are also meant to be good, and I've only heard them in commercial cabs.

The Volt LS201 is what you see in my photo. I find it an amazing driver for the money even if you do buy it from Wilmslow Audio!!!!

Unfortunately I believe the VOLT LS201 is now discontinued.I heard from TonyASS that they have ceased production of ALL steel framed drivers.

I think I had the last pair in the factory, although it's worth checking if Wilmslow have any.

Mine are goingto be matched with a pair of Morel MDT32s when I can get round to making the cab. Anyone got a couple of orange boxes lying around???????????

was a bit pricey when I last checked but they have a good selection and
are the only place I know over there that carry the LAT 500 among other
things. I just went on their site out of interest, I was roughly right
about the prices of the other drivers and...

Regarding the Vifa, I'm mistaken, the Ariel (6ft tline) is not a commercial design, so I have heard it in a diy cab.

I've found that anything big and unwieldy like cinder blocks works
reasonably well as a speaker stand, I've seen people use garden roman
pillar things.

Markie, what kind of size are you after?

there's a fruit and vedge market near my house that had plenty of empty orange box's out on the curb? or was it satsumas
