paint

I have a couple of speaker cabinets to paint, can anyone recommend the best paint to use?

Yep Aldcroft all the way just remember to thin the first coat with water, I use 75% paint 25% water.
Careful when painting with a roller on a hot day it starts to dry that quick it can make getting a consistent finish a bit tricky. Maybe do the final coat when its a bit cooler and maybe with a high humidity (not difficult at the moment).

I haven't found the Adcroft to be very hard waring, could do with some full fat paint - oil based, anybody know of any in the UK?

Interesting, blue aran are the only other place i know of that sells
the aldcrofts paint, im pritty sure blue aran get all there p audio
stuff from PAP, as well as some other stuff, there prices are
identical, possably dropshiped direct from PAP?

So PAP staff are activly discouraging people buying direct from
aldcrofts, and blue aran who they do a lot of business with is the only
other place to buy it? Or am i adding 2+2 and geting 5 JBL_man?



Im not that impressed witht he aldcrofts paint, its alright if you put
it on really thick, it sticks ok to ply, not so well to MDF and dosent
stick to PVA coated MDF. It does hold texture well just after
painting but when cabs have been sliding in and out of the van a few
times a lot of that texture has gone. Im using layland trade
floor paint at the moment as it sticks to PVA better, im sure there are
better coatings though.



A coat of PVA on cabs really tuffens them up i have found, i was
wondering it it would be possable to add a pigment / die to the PVA and
just coat cabs in that?

make sure you let it dry in a warm place for atleast 24hrs, longer the better.

well, the proper stuff is trimite, its tough, but its expensive, needs to be sprayed, stinks to high heaven and needs expensive thinners. Ive had good results with aldcrofts when ive given it a week to cure properly

I'm going to be building some new W bins and have bought some "tuff cab" paint from blue aran. Is that aldcroft?

Tuff cab is the same as aldcroft just re-branded as far as i now.

Aldcrofts can be a little tricky to get a really good looking, hardwearing finish but it can be done. The desk I'm working at now was PVA sealed MDF and has had 2 coats of the paint, applied with a brush! 18months on from when it was done it's really effing tough.

Worst thing you can do is paint a cab then take it out on a job soon after. The longer you can let the paint cure in a warm place (room temperature is fine) the harder it will be.

The other big advantage is that it's quick and easy to put another coat on now and again to cover any scratches etc.
