something a little different was created by saul
A mate approached me to help him create a new take on the classic leather top office desk.

we've decided to use just two materials - top quality birch ply and american cherry wood. birch for it's workability, strength and clean surfaces and cherry for its looks (and it smells amazing).

(not a cheap project)

there will be no mechanical fixings, it's all just glue/rebates/biscuits - clean and tidy.

This is the top, just finished assembly.

it will have a 50mmx24mm cherry bead around the edge.

the only treatment will be several coverings of Briwax as it's doesn't taint the wood, it just brings out the colour and grain.

Next part is to build some top quality drawer pedestals. i think we're going to get the laser machine to do some engraving on the side too

there will also be no visible evidence of plywood. After much deliberation, we decided not to reveal any edges. this means nearly all edges on the drawer units will be mitred .....

more pics to follow - it's a project being done in spare time

mods: move to unmoderated area if necessary

cheers

yes, we have a half decent morticer here too, i'm going to use it to cut the drawer surrounds.

i often use it to cut the corners out on square baffles for horns and stuff like that, when i do them by hand

Interesting stuff, Saul. We have a vintage furniture business run by my eldest daughter. We refurbish and paint everything. It's very satisfying to do, especially when you get to see how something was made 100 years ago.

Peace and goodwill to all speaker builders
