Glue or Screws or Both??? was created by anthonytutton
Hi.

I'm part way through dry assembly of a cubo 12 sub.
So far, I have dry screwed all the panels together to check measurements etc before I glue everything.

I would like to use a router to round-over all the edges, so my question is:

To round-over, I'm at risk of damaging the router bit with the screw heads, so therefore would anybody recommend only using tight fitting dowels with glue whilst clamping tightly during drying?

Or, do I need to recess all my screw heads enough to avoid collision with the router, then fill the holes after?

Thanks

Easier to just recess the screws and fill, but some people do use biscuits or dowels. The thing is, screws pull everything tight while the glue dries. The other methods will require careful and effective clamping to do the same job.

I think I'll screw to clamp while the dowels and glue dry, then remove some screws to make sure everything is still solid. Thanks for your reply

You can countersink the screw heads so that the router cutter misses, or do what I've done on occasions when things seemed a little too close, and that is after the glue has gone off, take the screws out and then router the radius on the edge. you can always put the stews back and counter sink a little deeper if needed before filling.

I find with 3.5 dia screws that they pull into the wood without countersinking. I usually drive them in about 3mm on the edges to miss the router bit.

Thanks for your comments!
My screws have also pulled in. I think I'm going to dowel and glue around the outside where I'm going to round over. Then when it's dry, I'll remove the screws and see if it's strong enough. But I'll leave the screws in for all the flat panels.
